Thank you so much for listening in here at West Side. We often say that we love the word of God because it points us to the son of God. We hope these messages encourage you and equip you to love Jesus more. We also want you to be apart of a local church, we believe these messages are only supplemental, being apart of a local church is essential. Blessings.

Mary: A Model for Motherhood- Mothers Day 2020
INTRO> Happy mothers Day! West Side is fortunate to have so many Godly women! This church is filled with both biological mothers and spiritual mothers!
APP> Today I want to look at motherhood from the most significant mother to ever live! Mary, the mother of Jesus. If Jesus is by far the most significant person to ever live, then his Mother has to be the most significant mother to ever live. As a matter of fact, Mary has held high honor in this history of Christianity (some good, some bad). Not only that, Mary was so influential in the story and life of Jesus that other false religions, like Islam even honor her, Mary hold the highest place a women can in Islam!
CONTEXT> I want to look at Luke’s gospel. Luke interviews eyewitness about Jesus life, Luke interviewed Mary. Luke mentions Mary more than any other gospel, 12x. Luke writes both his gospel and the book of Acts and mentions Mary in Both.
APP> So here is the goal: Let’s look at Mary as a model for motherhood. 8 marks from Mary’s model.
- Mary was ordinary.
Luke 1:27-27 “26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.”
APP> God see’s you!
2) Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:35 “35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.”
APP> God has made no provision for us to live the Christian life apart from the Holy Spirit.
3) Mary entrusted herself to God.
Luke 1:38 “38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.”
APP> The opposite of faith isn’t doubt the opposite of faith is control.
APP> God doesn’t give us explanations, he gives us promises.
APP> Church Fathers, “Mary’s “yes” changed the world
4) Mary sought counsel with older and wiser women.
Luke 1:39-40 “39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.”
Luke 1:56 “56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.”
APP> This shows humility and teachability! (You can learn from anyone!)
“3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.” – Titus 2:3-5
APP> Someone who has 40 years of marriage or even a divorce can teach you things that the popular book can’t!
5) Mary loved God first.
Luke 1:46-47 “46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…”
APP> What your husband, what you kids, what your family needs is a woman who loves God and then loved them. “A Mom who love for her kids is motivated by their achievements or behavior has identity issues. Is she has to raise the perfect child to feel at peace about her worth, he identity is misplaced. By asking motherhood to be her savior, she reveals not that she loves her kids too much, but too little.” Jen Wilkin
6) Mary’s family went to church.
Luke 2:22-23 “22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”)
APP> The family unit is like a solar system, it has to revolve around something.
7) Mary served the church.
Acts 1:14 “14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”
APP> Mary is here at a prayer meeting.
APP> You kids get served all the time by you, but they need to know what they need to serve something greater than them as well, the church!
8) Mary loved Jesus.
– Not just as her son, but as her savior.
– Gospel of John, Jesus gives his Mom to John.
– John pastors in Ephesus, church history record Mary partaking in communion.
“And Mary said, I’m bursting with God-news; I’m dancing the song of my Savior God. God took one good look at me, and look what happened— I’m the most fortunate woman on earth! What God has done for me will never be forgotten, the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others. His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him. He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts. He knocked tyrants off their high horses, pulled victims out of the mud. The starving poor sat down to a banquet; the callous rich were left out in the cold. He embraced his chosen child, Israel; he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high. It’s exactly what he promised, beginning with Abraham and right up to now.” The message Translation of the Magnificent
