Pastor’s Comment

Thank you so much for listening in here at West Side. We often say that we love the word of God because it points us to the son of God. We hope these messages encourage you and equip you to love Jesus more. We also want you to be apart of a local church, we believe these messages are only supplemental, being apart of a local church is essential. Blessings.

SERMON NOTES

Colossians 3:18-4:1 “An Embassy for the Kingdom” Part 2

Review: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:1-2

Big Idea > The Christian home is an embassy of heaven on earth.

APP> Last week we talked to wives and to husbands.

3 Crucial Concepts:

  • God created the family. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.”- Genesis 1:27-28 APP> The family by God’s design is the foundation for our formation
  • Sin distorted the family. “Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother?” He said, I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” – Genesis 4:8-9
    • The way this primarily plays out is this: Sin takes what should be a place of nurture and growth and makes it a place of neglect and death.*ILL- The CDC released a study 20 years ago in “ACEs- Adverse Childhood experiences 17,000. How does stressful and even abusive childhood experiences in the home affect an adult?
      • 60 % of US citizens are living with moderate to serious drama from their childhood.
      • 4 times more likely to suffer depression
      • 11 times more likely to become alcoholics
      • 16 times more likely to inject street drugs
      • 19 times more likely to attempt suicide https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html
    • Jesus restores the family. “for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”- Galatians 3:26 Jesus restores us to our Father first, then our family! *ILL> Tattoo Rescue TV Show- Tag line: Taking broken pieces and making master piec
  • Children: Obey. v20
    1. The mandate. “Obey” interesting, almost 99% of the time when the Bible speaks to children it’s with the exhortation to obey their parents.

Obedience – genuine, willing adherence to a request from somone is authority.

Obedience looks like…

  • Do what you are told. (2-4yrs)
  • Do it immediately. (4-8 yrs)
  • Do it with a good attitude. (Forever lol)

“And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:51

  1. The motive. “for this pleases the Lord” This is what we

Have said over and over in this section, “The Lord!”

APP> Obedience brings joy.

APP> If you don’t obey the authority you can see, how can you obey the authority you don’t see?

2) Fathers: Encourage. v21

  • The word that Paul uses here can be translated “parents” as in many passages. I believe though, the connection is so discipline, the Fathers primary role. His exhortation is to aggravate, there are two ways to do that, over discipline or underdicipline.

Ways we provoke our children:

  • Overprotection
  • Favoritism
  • No physical affection.
  • Over discipline
  • No discipline.
  • “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.”- Proverbs 13:24
  • “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.” Proverbs 11:25

APP> Discipline is a way parents disciple their children

Discipline for the 3 D’s:

  • Dishonesty
  • Disrespect
  • Disobedience

APP> The goal of discipline is heart transformation not behavior modification.

4 Tools for Discipline:

  1. The Rod
    • Separate the child.
    • Get on the child’s level.
    • Connect
    • Explain the transgression.
    • Spank
    • Restore the child back to fellowship.
  2. The Rebuke – “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” Proverbs 29:15
  3. The Removal of Freedom- choices have consequences.
  4. Plain and simple, work. Notice how the next section is about our jobs?

APP> The key to raising children is realizing that you are a child of God. God doesn’t just endure you, he enjoys you! So should the same be for our children.

“What if your greatest contribution to the kingdom of God is not something that you do but someone that you raise?”
