Rooted and Renegade: Acts 1:6-26 “The Waiting Room”

Review> We started a new book of the Bible last week! We said Acts = our ancestory.com Disciples are rooted in the words of Jesus and renegades in the continued works of Jesus.

INTRO> I found myself in one of my least fav places this week… a waiting room. I’m not a big fan, felt a lot of emotions. Waiting room brings out: 1) Anxiety 2) Doubt 3) Fear 4) Loss of control … Even this week I did a facebook post about waiting (PIC) 

CONTEXT> As I was sitting in that room this week, I couldn’t help but think about our text. You see, the disciples are literally in a room waiting v4 “4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me..”

• The waiting room of Jesus return: “so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” – Hebrews 9:28
• The waiting room of…

• • • • • • Waiting for a new job
          • Waiting to build or buy that house
          • Waiting to heal from the hurt
          • Waiting for your child to return to the Lord
          • Waiting to get pregnant
          • Waiting for the chemo to be finished 
          • Waiting on that phone call 

APP> I don’t even think we realize how much we struggle listen to how future orientated our conversations are… “Going to college? What’s your major? What are you going to do with that major? When are y’all gonna get married? When are y’all gonna have kids? When are y’all gonna have #2? 

APP> There is something though. I’ve learned not to go into waiting rooms empty handed, I almost always have a book or some work with me. That’s what I see in our passage today, I see 4 tools that the disciples have, that we need to have if we are going to wait well… 

1. Wait with God’s plan. 

Acts 1:6-7 “So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.”

• The disciples are still confused about Jesus’ agenda and the kingdom of God.
• Stott says they were wanting a “political, national and immediate kingdom” 

1. Patience isn’t just the ability to wait. Patience is the ability to wait joyfully.
2. God will is like a compass not a calendar. *ILL> Direction vs details.

2) Wait with God’s promises. 

Acts 1:8-11 “8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

• Jesus has talked to them about this very moment before, the last night he was with them. “25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:25-26

1. What God promises, he provides. 
2. The power of God is in the presence of God. “upon you”
3. What if what you are waiting on God to do, God is waiting on you to do? 

3) Wait with God’s people. 

Acts 1:12-14 – “Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 

1. God has never asked us to wait alone. *ILL> Putting trampoline together “find a partner” APP> Plug WSW and WSM
2. Who are the  “Upper Room” people in your life? 

4) Wait with God’s provision:

1. God’s Word: Acts 1:15-16 “15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
2. God given logic: Acts 1:21-23 “21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
3. Prayer: Acts 1:24-26 “24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
