Pastor’s Comment

Thank you so much for listening in here at West Side. We often say that we love the word of God because it points us to the son of God. We hope these messages encourage you and equip you to love Jesus more. We also want you to be apart of a local church, we believe these messages are only supplemental, being apart of a local church is essential. Blessings.

SERMON NOTES

Easter 2022- Remember the Resurrection Luke 24:1-12

Intro: Today is the day! It is the most important day in human history because it is about the most important human in all of history, Jesus Christ! Think about it, more songs have been sung, more books written, more building built more paintings painted, more money given because of 1 man, Jesus Christ! He is even how we tell time! BC- Before Christ AD- Year of our Lord. Today there are some 2.3 BILLION people who claim to follow this man… And all of his life points to this moment, on this day!

Illustration:

Today I want to take a different approach to this famous story, a story that no doubt many of us are familiar with. Maybe this illustration will help. *ILL> Story of me locking my keys in my car but actually having the keys with me. You see, I had access to something that I needed, I possessed the key, I had just forgotten, I couldn’t remember! I needed to remember what I had!

I think many of us in this room today are like that! We are stressed, striving and trying to figure life out and the reality is we have accesses to the best news in the world all we need to do it… remember! We all are so familiar with this Easter story, but if we know it, why are we so disconnected from it. We are so familiar with the Easter story that we have forgotten about it’s power. How do we get this power?

The great Samuel Johnson who was a founding politician in our country said these words, “People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.” – Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Context:

You see I think we have the same problem that these disciples had in the Easter Story! Did you hear it mentioned when it was read to you? Right here in the account there is a word used 2x that gives us what we need for today. v6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you,… v8 And they remembered his words… another interesting insight…. the word “tomb” shares the same root word as remembering. Tombs are for remembering. • This word “Remember is used over 300x in the scriptures! • “Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.” 1 Peter 1:12-15 • “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead…” 2 Timothy 2:8

Big Idea > Remember the resurrection!

APP> But what’s the big deal if you forget? Like, really? WHY do I need to remember?

I think the answer is right here in the text:

When we forget:

we live in confusion. v4 “while they were perplexed….”

we look for life in the wrong places. v5 “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

we become filled with fear. v5 “as they were frighted…”

1) Remember Jesus’s words. v6

“He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you…” Luke 24:6 I find it SO compelling that the angel basically reminded them to read their Bibles again, lol You have to understand, nobody ever spoke like Jesus! He didn’t just say that he was A way to God, Jesus said that HE WAS GOD!

APP> Why is this so important?

ILL> Have you ever run out of gas before? I have, and it’s super frustrating! You can’t go anywhere and most of the time it’s right when you need to be somewhere! Our lives are like that.. we desire to move forward, to keep making it through life but we just simply don’t have the fuel, it may be emotional physical or whatever.

God’s word is the only fuel that will keep you moving forward.

2) Remember Jesus’s cross. v7 “…that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” Luke 24:7 I love that that angel said this! The Easter story according to the angel includes a bloody cross!

You can’t have a resurrection until you have had a crucifixion!

APP> The cross tells us two crucial truths: None of us are worthy. None of us are worthless.

3) Remember Jesus’s empty tomb. v6 & v12 “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” v12“But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.”

This is what our entire faith is all about! That Jesus Christ physically rose from the grave conquering the enemy, sin. and death!

God didn’t roll away the stone so Jesus could get out, God rolled away the stone so we could get in!

Big Idea > Remember the resurrection! Remember, God’s grace is greater than your sin! Remember, God’s faithfulness is greater than your faithlessness. Remember, if God is for you, who can be against you? Remember, death does not have the final word!
