SERMON NOTES

Defining Moments Part 2 Isaiah 6:1-8

Review:

        • A defining moment is an experience that is memorable, meaningful and missional.
        • The quality of our lives is dependent on how we respond to these defining moments.
        • What is God saying to us?
        • Chrons= chronological time
        • Kairos= God’s time! Perfecting timing!
        • *REVIEW KIAROS LEARNING CIRCLE

*ILL> I had a Kairos moments this week! We took our youngest daughter Piper to meet her teachers. This is a big deal because this is the first time! Then… we hoped in the car and drove over to the middle school to meet Romans teacher. And I had this moments of wait…. I remember doing this with Roman.!

APP> When it comes to theses types of Kairos Moments, I think it’s important to know that there can be multiple types.

5 Types Of Karios Moments:

    1. The Brick Wall –
    2. The Speed Bump-
    3. The Mirror-
    4. The Vision-
    5. The Smile-

CONTEXT> Today, in our text. It is no doubt a “Brick Wall” Kairos Moment. This is Isaiah’s “defining moment” his BIG Kairos moment. I want to walk through this passage and see if we can’t see a pattern to help us navigate our “Brick Wall” Kiaros moments.

1) A Crisis. v1a

        • v1 “In the year that King Uzziah died…” We know who this King was (PIC) He ruled for FIFTY-TWO years! Israel was prosperous the most at that time and he is gone! Everything that was stable has now become unstable.

*ILL> One German scientist has estimated that that average person has somewhere between 5-7 crisis’ in their lifetime.

APP> A crisis is always a catalyst for change. *ILL> Did you know that the root word for crisis means “to decide”

APP> You can’t control a crisis but you can control how you respond in a crisis.

2) Clarity. v1-4

        • “I saw the Lord…” this is significant, amidst the crisis and chaos there is a moment, a window when Isaiah see’s something that changes everything…. he see’s God.

*ILL> Do you know when the city of city reportedly had the highest average attendance? 1940-41, especially during the 76 day “blitz, when Germany bomb the city for 76 days straight….. or how about this… 9/11? Remember the Sundays after 9/11, churches were packed… WHY?
APP> A crisis gives us clarity in the fact that we all desire a deep connection to God.

Isaiah’s Clarity:

      • Sovereignty- God is in control of the crisis. “I saw him seated on the throne…”
      • Separateness-  God is completely and totally perfect.

APP> So why don’t those 9/11 moments last? Why isn’t church attendance the same? What’s the difference in being “shaken-up” and “shaken to the core”?

3) Conviction & Confession. v5

        • “Woe is me, For I am lost!” this is the proper response to a revelation of who God is! Remember what we said last week? Repentance isn’t a dirty word!

“In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that-and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison- you do not know God or yourself at all.” C.S. Lewis.

        • “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are you ways my ways,” declares the LORD. ‘As the heaven are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than you thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

APP> Repentance is recognizing that we are not God.

4) Cleansing. 6-7

        • “… Behold.. your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for!”

APP> God only uses broken vessels!

APP> God uses your weakness to show his strength!

5) Calling v8-9

        • “Whom shall I send and who shall go for us?”

APP> God uses people to reach people!

APP> So do you see it? This is the pattern:

      1. Crisis
      2. Clarity
      3. Conviction & Confession
      4. Cleansing
      5. Calling

This isn’t just how God worked in Isaiah’s life… it’s  how he works today?!

          • “Isaiah said these things because he saw his (Jesus) glory and spoke of him (Jesus).” John 12:41

Big Idea > What if your “brick-wall” is actually God breaking-through?

Application:

        1. What is the Spirit of God saying to you through the word of God?
        2. What are you going to do about it?
